ADMINISTERING

Monitoring Configuration application (EVENTS4.NSF)
The Monitoring Configuration application includes a configuration user interface for use with Domino® Domain Monitoring (DDM). Use this interface to set up DDM probes and a collection hierarchy of servers that collect information from other servers.

A collection server collects two classes of event information, enhanced events and simple events. Enhanced events include events generated by the DDM probes, events generated by instrumentation that is new since Domino 7.0, events generated by the Event Generator, and any other event that is associated with a specific target. A simple event is any event that is not associated with or that does not contain specific target information. For example, most of the events that are reported to the event console are simple events.

For more information about the DDM configuration user interface, and the collection hierarchy, see the related topics.

The Monitoring Configuration application also includes a set of default documents you use to set up system-monitoring. You can edit the default documents or use the configuration wizards in the Monitoring Configuration application to create new ones.

Table 1. Default documents in the Monitoring Configuration application
DocumentDescription
DDM ProbeDefines the probe type, probe subtype, a general description of the probe, configurable specifics on what the probe monitors, how results are reported, and other related information.
DDM FilterDefines which event types, event classes, and event severities are reported to the DDM file.
Event GeneratorDefines the parameters of an event.
Event HandlerDescribes the action Domino takes when an event occurs.
Event Notification MethodDefines the notification method to use when the Event Handler document prescribes notification.
Log FilterSpecifies events that you do not want to log to either the server console or the log file.
Server Console ConfigurationSets the text, background, and color attributes for the Domino server console.
Statistic DescriptionDefines the properties of a statistic. You can specify the default threshold values and type of statistic such as OS or Activity statistic..
Server Statistic CollectionSpecifies the name of the collector server, the servers from which the statistics are collected, the collection report and alarm intervals, and the statistics filters to apply..

There are six Event Generator documents. The Event Generator documents specify a threshold or condition, which, when met, causes events to be generated.

Table 2. Event Generator documents
Event generatorDescription
Database event generator
  • Monitors database activity and free space
  • Monitors frequency and success of database replication
  • Reports on ACL changes, including those made by replication or an API program
Domino server response event generator
  • Checks connectivity and port status of designated servers in a network
Mail routing event generator
  • Sends a mail-trace message to a particular user's mail server and gathers statistics indicating the amount of time, in seconds, it takes to deliver the message
Statistic event generator
  • Monitors a specific Domino or platform statistic
Task status event generator
  • Monitors the status of Domino server and add-in tasks
TCP server event generator
  • Verifies the availability of Internet ports (TCP services) on servers and generates a statistic indicating the amount of time, in milliseconds, it takes to verify that the server is responding on the specified port
